Why did it take us so long to book a flight down to Okinawa? Famous for its pristine swimming and snorkelling spots, it's the perfect summer destination, really close to Kyushu, and our friends have been raving about it for years. We finally found out first-hand how wonderful Okinawa can be, as we soaked up the sunshine, stuffed ourselves full of goya champuru and Orion beer, and swam non-stop for four days last week.
Made up of over a hundred islands, the prefecture offers incredible coastlines with the clearest blue waters, coral reefs and marine wildlife; Not to mention delicious local food (some of the best!) and a unique blend of cultures that influences the architecture, customs and general feel of Okinawa. It's so unlike any place I've visited inside Japan, it almost felt like an overseas trip.
We spent two nights on Zamami (one of the Kerama Islands close to the mainland), and two nights in Onna-son. There's so much to say, and I wish I had the energy to tell you about our trip in detail, but for now pictures will have to suffice. Welcome to Okinawa...
