Saga International Balloon Fiesta 2015

Words by Kamil, photos by me. The prospect of a 5:30am wake up and early morning drive to Saga was not particularly appealing after a late night. It was certainly worth the effort, though, as we crossed the Sefuri range just after sunrise and were greeted by a flotilla of colourful orbs soundlessly floating into the distance. The orange glow of the morning sun gave the whole scene a mystical hue, painting the rice fields and riverbanks in a golden light.

Overhead the balloons gently rose and fell, somehow managing to avoid colliding as the cluster stretched towards the horizon. There was constant movement, some drifting down as others shot up with a hiss and burst of flame.

Somehow we found ourselves at a checkpoint where one after another the balloons swooped down with surprising agility, dropped their markers, then rose again to rejoin the rainbow streaming towards the event area. All this activity and yet the scene was one of surreal peace as the residents awoke to find their city filled with a brilliant array of brightly coloured aerial visitors.

We followed the crowd towards the event stage and had a chance to wander around under some impressively shaped balloon characters but nothing could top the early morning encounter.
