Two Weeks in Iceland, Day 4: Svínafellsjökull, Jökulsárlón & Hof

Glacier day! We set out on the Ring Road for the day's exciting activities, including a glacier hike at Svínafellsjökull and a trip to the glacier lagoon Jökulsárlón. On the way it was hard to resist pulling the car over a few times to soak in the spectacular scenery.

Svínafellsjökull was the location of our much-anticipated glacier hike. Meeting up with the tour group, we strapped on our clampons and set off on an icy adventure with two young, funny guides who were happy to share their wide knowledge of glaciers with us. I learnt a lot and it was wonderful to step over crevasses, crunch around on the fresh summer ice and take a nice long walk on the glacier's surface.

En route to Jökulsárlón, we pulled over for various dream-like scenes. A field of lilac summer lupines...

And a darling little church with a grass-covered roof...

Later in the day we found the glacier lake at Jökulsárlón - the big blue chunks of floating glacier were exactly how I had imagined them to be. Each one was like an immaculately carved ice sculpture. Washed up on the beach, they looked like a surreal art installation.

We took an amphibian boat tour out on the glacier lake to get a closer look. Although the glaciers are the piercing blue colour you'd expect, we were amused to see that the water in the lake was brown and looked frothy like Coca-Cola as our boat went through the water.

That evening we soaked in the hotpot baths at our accommodation in Hof. These photos were taken at around 9pm at night, still in bright daylight. Thanks midnight sun!
