In late January we went on a fun overnight getaway to onsen town Unzen in Nagasaki Prefecture with our friends Momo & Motoki. Photos to follow are a mix of ones taken on our camera and those by Motoki. Fun times as always, and the steamy setting of Unzen is quite a treat in the cold winter.
On the way there we stopped at Yutoku Inari Shrine, Kashima. Dedicated to the wild fox god Inari, this incredible shrine is a well-kept secret in Saga Prefecture. The dramatic red structure juts out on the side of a hill. You can climb up the mountain behind the shrine too, through some tunnels of red torii gates similar to the famous ones in Kyoto's Fushimi Inari Shrine (which is Japan's most important and famous Inari shrine), but not as long or impressive. Still, this shrine turned out to be one of my favourites in Kyushu.
We checked into our Unzen hotel for a night of onsen soaking, eating ryokan food and celebrating Kamil's upcoming birthday.
