Love Locks at Fukuoka Tower

The first area of Fukuoka we took our guests to was the beautiful Momochi beach. Located less than 10 minutes walk from our apartment, it's home to the Fukuoka Tower as well a lovely boardwalk/beach area from which you can see most of Hakata Bay.

This is the view as you walk towards the tower...

When we arrived at the beach, we had some lunch by the sea. The four females of the group ordered the "Ladies' Lunch" and Kamil, not being a lady, opted for the pizza.

Then we took a ride up Fukuoka Tower for a bird's eye view of the city. It was our first time going up the tower too, so it was really fun to point out all of the places we've been visiting in daily life over the past month-and-half.

Apparently 7,910km from Australia. A long way from home!

The tower had a corner called "Lover's Sanctuary" where couples are encouraged to buy love heart shaped locks, and write messages of love on them, before locking them onto the tower....

Usually I would probably think this is a tacky, money-making idea, but it was actually really lovely. Running your hands over the hundreds (thousands even?) of locks, I felt happy that there is so much love around in this world. Kamil and I didn't buy a lock this time, but we put our hands on the two halves of the love heart statue, causing it to change colour. Pretty cool...

And that was the end of our morning in Momochi Beach, but not the end of our day. Part II. to follow...
